Fishing Bonaire
Coral reefs and open sea
Bonaire is an ancient island that was formed by volcanic activity about 60 to 70 million years ago. The highest points of the seabed became shallower or even above the water surface. From then on, the water around the island was shallow enough for coral growth.
These reefs form the basis of present-day Bonaire. Nowadays the coral is found in large areas and is of particularly good quality. These reefs extend several hundred meters from the coast. From there, the seabed plunges into the depths, up to several hundred meters deep and this at a relatively short distance from the island.
The bottom of the deep sea is varied. There are flat and barren bottoms, but also underwater mountains, reefs and steep drop offs.
